Komets Fall to Elmira 4-3 in Shootout
by: Jason M. Kilander | Managing Editor - Chicago Sports Day | Tuesday, January 18, 2005

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Komets came into Sunday's game at Memorial Coliseum having lost four of their last six games and looked to get back on track against the Eastern Divisions last place club, the Elmira Jackals.

Elmira came out the aggressor early in the contest trying to physically dominate the Komets, who on top of several key injuries were skating their third game in as many nights, and it showed early as the Komets looked weary throughout the first stanza of play.

"We’ve just been unable to put 60 minutes of real solid hockey together lately, giving up three first period goals, it’s a tough hill to climb," said coach Greg Puhalski.

The Jackals took an early lead on the Komets as Carl Drakensjo, with assist’s from Thompson an Poirier, hit a beautiful wrist shot on Fort Wayne’s Kevin St. Pierre. The goal was Drakensjo’s seventh of the season, but would not be his last on this night.

The Jackals would strike once again in the first period when center Greg Koehler flipped a weak wrister past St. Pierre on a power play giving Elmira a 2-0 edge. The goal was assisted by Antonovich and Burgess and came at 13:08 of the first.

Elmira’s second goal seemed to be a wake up call for the weary Komets as center Sean Venedam put the K’s on the board at 14:34 of the first on a power play goal. Drovin and Chaulk assisted on thegoal.

But as soon as the K’s got the wake up call, they seemingly hit the snooze button as Drakensjo scored his second goal of the period. Goal assisted by Andreyevand Campbell.

The Jackals stormed out to a 3-1 lead after one and was giving the Komets more than a handful as they continually pressed them hard. The Komets also struggled on defense throughout the first as was quite evident by the score.

The Komets looked livelier in the midway point of the second period as they were skating with more purpose but would fall back into their lackadaisical state in the latter portion of the period.

They would however draw closer when center Colin Chaulk scored his 14th goal of the season, making it a 3-2 Elmira lead after two. Chaulk’s goal was assisted by Stewart and Neumeier.

The Komets came out in the third and tied it up early on a goal by Steve Rodberg. After words both teams started to play not to lose as they went to a shootout.

"We do have to start playing 60 minutes, if you’re a hockey team that’s only playing two-thirds of the game, you’re a hockey team that is going to lose the game," forward Sean Vendeman said. "That’s been the case in a lot of games of late and I don’t know if that’s mental or physical."

And in the shootout the Jackals star for the evening gave Elmira the victory in sudden death when he beat St. Pierre for his third goal of the night.

The loss marks Fort Wayne’s fifth loss in seven games and has them scratching their head on how to get back on track.
